Friday, April 26 – CHICAGO / EN ROUTE (I) We depart Chicago today on our overnight non-stop flight to Dublin, Ireland.
Saturday, April 27 – DUBLIN / KILKENNY (B,D) We arrive in Dublin this morning where we are met by our Driver/Guide, who will accompany us as we explore Ireland. Leaving the airport we’ll stop for a traditional Irish breakfast at The Poitin Still Pub. Then we’ll make our way to Kilkenny, one of Ireland’s loveliest medieval cities. An introduction to Kilkenny will take us to the Dominican Black Abbey and St. Canice’s hilltop cathedral before reaching Parliament Street, home to the Rothe House, a unique Irish merchant’s townhouse. Then we’ll enjoy a tour and tasting at Smithwicks Brewery, for which Kilkenny is famous. We’ll then travel along High Street dominated by the 18th century Tholsel, with its distinctive clock tower and arcade, before stopping to visit magnificently restored Kilkenny Castle. Kilkenny is famous for many charming pubs; Kytlers Inn, The Marble City Bar, Lani-gan’s and Matt the Miller – just to mention a few – and it’s John’s intention to sink a pint in most of them, and to play some fine Irish music.
Sunday, April 28 – KILKENNY / KILLARNEY (B) This morning we travel through Ireland’s Golden Vale to County Tipperary and a visit the Rock of Cashel. A symbol of royal and priestly power for more than a millennium, the Rock enabled Cashel’s inhabitants to scour the surrounding plains for potential invaders. Leaving Cashel, we’ll travel to Blarney for a visit to fabled Blarney Castle. Here you’ll have an opportunity to climb the steps of the fortress and kiss the world-famous Blarney Stone to gain the gift of eloquence, wit and wisdom. Just a stone’s throw away we’ll also visit the Blarney Woolen Mills, the largest emporium of Irish crafts in the country where we can browse the finely woven Irish woolen products, or join John in Christys Pub for a pint. We’ll then travel on to Killarney in the scenic southwest, it is here where we’ll find some of the most picturesque views in all of Ireland. After checking in at our hotel it’s off to visit more iconic pubs; The Laurel’s and for some great Irish music, The Danny Mann for dinner and a show. (B,D)
Monday, April 29 – KILLARNEY (B)
Today we explore the Dingle Peninsula, the western-most part of Ireland that juts out into the Atlantic and contains some of the most ancient and traditional aspects of Irish culture. And don’t forget to try the chowder that County Kerry is famous for. Following a visit to the thriving fishing port of Dingle we’ll make our way around the Slea Head promontory where we’ll see the prehistoric beehive huts that were used as shelter for monks in the early Christian period, and for a spectacular view of the Blasket Islands. From here we’ll travel in the shadow of the towering Mount Brandon as we make our way through the more remote areas of the peninsula. Our last visit of the day will take us to the nearby Gallarus Oratory, shaped like an upturned boat and overlooking Smerwick Harbor, the tiny drystone church is a relic of early Irish Christianity. This evening we’re free to enjoy dinner at one of the many pubs in Killarney.
Tuesday, April 30 – KILLARNEY / ENNIS (B)After free time in Killarney this morning, we’ll depart and travel north to the village of Adare. Billed as Ireland’s prettiest village, we’ll have an opportunity to stroll along the town’s Main Street of thatched houses, colorfully painted storefronts and beautiful gardens. Afterward we’ll continue north to Ennis, one of Ireland’s most picturesque towns, known for its painted storefronts and folk music festivals. Its history, combined with its famous narrow streetscapes and character buildings, are what make this charming town so special.
Wednesday, May 1 – ENNIS (B,L)
An amazing day is in store as we travel through the beautiful scenery of Ireland to the coast to view the majestic Cliffs of Moher, a rocky wall that rises 700 feet above the foaming Atlantic Ocean. We’ll then travel down the coast to Loop Head Peninsula, a slender finger of land pointing out to sea from the most westerly point of County Clare. Loop Head epitomizes what the Wild Atlantic Way is about: panoramic cliff views, abundant quiet beauty spots, and fascinating historic sites, including Tullig Famine Village, Church of the Little Ark, and The Graves of the Yellowmen. This afternoon we’ll return to our hotel and the evening is at leisure. Just be sure to leave time for our trad music session in the atmospheric Poet’s Corner Pub of The Old Ground hotel.
Thursday, May 2 – ENNIS /GALWAY (B,L,D)
Today we depart Ennis and travel to the most picturesque location at the shores of Galway Bay near Kinvara in County Galway to visit Dunguaire Castle. No visit to Ireland is complete without a visit to one of its many historic castles, and with a 75-foot tower and defensive wall against a stunning backdrop, Dunguaire is the most photographed castle in Ireland! Afterward we’ll head out for the city of Galway. On arrival we’ll enjoy a panoramic introduction to the city’s main sights including the large modern Cathedral of St. Nicholas, set on an island in the Corrib River; Eyre Square; the Old Quays; Spanish Arch; and the Claddagh area, an independent fishing community beyond the city walls.
Friday, May 3 – GALWAY / DUBLIN (B)
This morning, we’ll head once again into the beautiful Irish countryside as we make our way to the capital city of Dublin and enjoy an introductory tour of this famous city on the Liffey River. Points of interest include the
Bank of Ireland built in 1729 and formerly the Irish Parliament; the National Museum; Dublin Castle; and Four Courts built in the 18th century and now housing the High Courts of Justice. Afterward, we’ll visit the Guinness Storehouse to see exhibits on how this world-famous stout was first created and why it is so popular today, and finish our visit in the rooftop bar, Gravity, overlooking the city center where you can sample a draft Guinness and enjoy the view of the city. Tonight we’ll end our stay with style at The Irish House Party for our farewell dinner and Hooley featuring traditional Irish music and dance.
Saturday, May 4 – DUBLIN (B,I)
This morning we end our tour and travel to Dublin Airport for our return journey to Chicago. No better time to reflect on memories to last a lifetime and new friendships made along the way!
