The Yellow River

There’s a tiny little river not so very far away
Water clear and sandy bottom, on her banks the muskrats play
Grassy brinks with stately cattails, pussywillow perfume blow
Now and then a bullfrog’s chatter on the swimming hole below

Oh the Yellow River, twinkling in the summertime
Flowing like a nursery rhyme, your heart remembers best
Oh the Yellow River, painted carpets in the fall
Leaves pass by reminding all that time never rests
Oh the Yellow River peaceful in the winter snow
Dreamlike banks that seem to know each of our requests
Oh the Yellow River waking us to spring
Full and wide she sings of new lives
With which we’re blest

Just a place in sultry August to sit and idly lie
the shade of spreading maple beneath a bright blue sky
Waters whisper there beside me and welcome my repose
the ducks go paddling by you, that’s how the river goes

Oh the Yellow River, twinkling in the summertime
Flowing like a nursery rhyme, your heart remembers best
Oh the Yellow River, painted carpets in the fall
Leaves pass by reminding all that time never rests
Oh the Yellow River peaceful in the winter snow
Dreamlike banks that seem to know each of our requests
Oh the Yellow River waking us to spring
Full and wide she sings of new lives
With which we’re blest
